If you ever want to write a platinum-selling hit song and are wondering what chords to use in the chorus, it might be worth your while bearing in mind the chord progression: I-V-VI-IV

These chords have been used in some of the most successful songs in pop history. Ever since The Beatles Let It Be, this winning combination of chords has helped many artists to sell records in millions.

This mash features a number of recent hit singles based on this progression, which is why they mix together seamlessly. I had to change the key and tempo of most the tracks, but once that was done, putting the mix together required little effort.

This hackneyed chord progression has a very commercial (or "cheesy") sound, which is why it's probably the cheesiest mashup in the world!

Disturbia Mixes

I felt the "bum-bum-bee-dum bum-bum-bee-dee-dum-dum" refrain of Rihanna's forthcoming single Disturbia somehow had a soviet feel to it, so I tried adding some "Russian" music to it. And it worked out pretty well! In fact, I liked the sound of this so much that I created two "Russian" mixes featuring popular Belarus guitarist DiDuLa.

The music in the Darkness mix is a track entitled Russian and music featured in the Light mix is Package From Romania.

DiDuLa's albums are extremely good but difficult to get hold of. I highly recommend his work if you can find it. His 2002 CD Road To Baghdad is my favourite.

Love Lament

The Kooks - Naive
The Supremes - You Can't Hurry Love
Jimmy Ruffin - What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted
Gladys Knight & The Pips - I Heard It Through the Grapevine

I was feeling in a melancholy mood the other day so I thought I'd put together something that reflected my mood at the time. My collection of Motown acapellas seemed to be an ideal starting point given that Motown has produced a number of tracks bemoaning love in one way or another. You may have already worked out that I like to mix genres whenerever possible, so I thought I'd go for a modern-day indie instrumental to overlay some Motown acapellas onto. I'd recently stumbled upon some Kooks instrumentals of which one was the beautiful but malancholic Naive. Perfect! And this is the result.

Bleeding Remix!

Featuring:
Leona Lewis Feat. Trazz - Bleeding Love
OMD - Enola Gay (Sample)

Another poppy Calmucho mix. This one is a simple pop synth mix of the official remix of Bleeding Love. It features a rap by Trazz. The drum loop at the beginning that continues throughout the track is from OMD's Enola Gay from 1980. The synth riff from that track also features on a couple of occassions in this mix.

Better In Time (Reggae Mix)

Featuring:
Leona Lewis - Better In Time
Alicia Keys - No One (Reggae Instrumental)

Watch the video (YouTube)

This is a straightforward mash I made a couple of months ago for my YouTube channel. Check out the video for it here.

Give It 2 Me Twice More

Featuring:

Madonna - Give It 2 Me
Timbaland, Nelly Furtado & Justin Timberlake - Give It To Me
Britney Spears - Gimme More

I'm not sure if this is a mashup or a megamix or a remix. It's not a traditional A+B mashup, but at any ony time there is usually more than one of the featured tracks playing simultaneously. The bassline that runs throughout the entire mix is from HRH Madonna's new single Give It 2 Me. The drums and occasional "acid" bass are from Spartaque's remix of Timbaland's Give It To Me. Over the top of these elements are acapellas and samples from Britney, Justin, Timbo, Nelly and Madonna from tracks with Give..Me or Gimme in the title.

I uploaded this mix to YouTube on May 10th and it has been well received. If you're not offended by commerial pop/house you'll probably like it too. But if you have more ecclectic tastes then this blog is not for you!
